Project Overview
In 2006, First United Methodist Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, embarked on a major expansion — a 64,000-square-foot Celebration Center addition and renovation designed to support a growing congregation while preserving the architectural integrity of a church originally constructed in 1893.
The project was delivered as a design-build partnership led by Horst Construction, with architecture by Cornerstone Design Architects.
Quality Stone Veneer was selected to develop and install a custom exterior stone solution that would seamlessly connect new construction to the historic structure.
The Challenge
The church’s original exterior featured natural 1800's quarried stone that defined its historic character. However, by 2006, that stone was no longer available.
The addition required:
- Visual continuity with a building over 100 years old
- Architectural detailing consistent with historic masonry
- A solution that would not appear as a “modern appendage”
- Long-term durability appropriate for a community landmark
Rather than choose a standard profile, we approached the project the way we approach all meaningful work with our partners — through full customization.
Our Solution: Regal Ashlar
Working closely with ownership and the project team, we hand-casted molds directly from the church’s original natural stone. From that process, we developed a fully custom profile we named Regal Ashlar.
Our team then artistically developed a proprietary color blend to match the tone, texture, and aging characteristics of the existing façade.
To compliment in stunning detail, a custom color matched, custom designed Siota Precast Architectural accent package was developed and installed alongside our stone by our installation craftsmen.
During installation, we also paired the stone with:
- A traditional ribbon joint
- Careful coursing alignment to mirror the historic elevations
Because Quality Stone Veneer served as both manufacturer and installer, we maintained complete quality control — from full product and packaged design, to project estimation, to in-house product manufacturing, to delivery, and our final expert installation on site.
The project later received the ABC Keystone Excellence in Construction Award of Merit.
Please join us in celebrating 50 years of design-driven stone veneer, and masterful installation!
